How to Protect PSA Graded Slabs: The Complete Guide
· UpdatedShare
Short answer: protect a PSA slab against three threats: corner impacts, scratches on the holder faces and UV fade. A TPU bumper handles impacts (from $9.99), a guard with an acrylic case adds scratch protection and clean stacking ($14.99), a magnetic aluminum case with UV-protective glass covers all three ($24.99), and an acrylic display box keeps a protected slab dust-free on a shelf ($39.99).
You paid to grade the card. From that moment, the holder itself becomes the thing to protect. A scratched or dinged PSA slab looks worse in photos, sells for less, and sending it back for a reholder costs money and weeks of waiting. This guide explains how slabs get damaged and the protection ladder that stops each type of damage.
The three threats to a PSA graded slab
1. Corner dings and edge impacts
This is the most common damage we see at our card show tables. A PSA holder is rigid acrylic, so when it is dropped or knocked against another slab, the force concentrates on the corners and edges. The result is chips, white stress marks and cracks around the label. Slabs carried loose in a backpack, a box or a pocket take these hits constantly.
2. Surface scratches
Standard PSA holders have no stacking ridges. Stack two bare slabs and they slide on each other, and every slide leaves micro-scratches on the faces. Wiping dust off with a dry cloth adds more. Scratches are what make a slab look tired under light and in listing photos.
3. UV fade
Sunlight and strong indoor lighting slowly fade card colors, especially reds and blues. The slab offers limited UV protection on its own. A card that sits near a window for a year can look visibly duller than the same card kept in a drawer.
The PSA slab protection ladder
Not every card needs the same level of protection. Match the protection to the value of the card and to what you do with it: carry it, stack it, or display it.
| Level | Product | Stops | Best for | Price (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guard Bumper PSA | Corner and edge impacts | Every slab you carry or trade | $9.99 (3 for $24.99) |
| 2 | Guard Acrylic PSA | Impacts + face scratches, stacks cleanly | Shelves, boxes, large collections | $14.99 (3 for $39.99) |
| 3 | Metal Case PSA | Impacts + scratches + UV | Grails and cards on display | $24.99 (3 for $59.99) |
| 4 | Acrylic Box PSA | Dust and handling, around any level above | Display shelves and gifts | $39.99 (2 for $69.99) |
Level 1: a TPU guard bumper
The Guard Bumper PSA is a precision-fit TPU frame that wraps the edges of the slab. TPU is a flexible, shock-absorbing polymer, so it takes the impact before it reaches the corners. It slides on in seconds, uses no adhesive, leaves no residue and keeps the label and the card fully visible. It comes in 38 colorways, which also makes it easy to sort a collection by set, player or Pokémon type. If you only do one thing, put a bumper on every slab that leaves the house.
Level 2: guard plus acrylic case
The Guard Acrylic PSA combines a TPU guard with a rigid, crystal-clear acrylic case. You get the shock absorption of the guard and a hard layer over both faces, so the holder itself never touches anything. The shape is stackable, which solves the sliding problem of bare PSA slabs. It is the best protection per dollar for a growing collection, in 40 colorways.
Level 3: magnetic aluminum case with UV glass
The Metal Case PSA is an anodized aluminum frame with an anti-scratch, UV-protective glass panel and a strong magnetic closure. It is the only level that addresses all three threats at once: impacts, scratches and UV. It fits standard PSA, CGC and TAG slabs up to about 8 mm thick, so one case covers three grading companies. This is the case for your grails and for any card that sits where daylight can reach it.
Level 4: an acrylic display box
The Acrylic Box PSA is a magnetic acrylic display case sized to hold a PSA slab with its protection still on: a Guard Bumper, a Guard Acrylic or a Metal Case slides straight in. It keeps dust off, closes with a magnetic lid and stacks, so you can build a display wall without your slabs ever touching each other.
Which level does each card need?
- Bulk graded cards and trade stock: Level 1. A bumper on each slab, stored upright in a box.
- Your personal collection on a shelf: Level 2. Guard Acrylic cases, stacked or standing.
- Grails, high-value cards and anything near a window: Level 3, in a Metal Case.
- Your top display pieces: Level 3 inside Level 4, a Metal Case in an Acrylic Box.
Carrying slabs to card shows
Shows are where most slab damage happens: slabs knock together in bags, get passed hand to hand and get set down on hard tables. Put a bumper on everything you bring. For the card you want to show off, the SLABIUM BAG is a crossbody sling with a front display window that fits PSA, BGS, CGC and TAG slabs, so your best card stays visible and protected while your hands stay free. See our card show checklist for the rest.
Storage habits that protect slabs
- Store slabs upright, like books, rather than in tall flat stacks.
- Keep them away from windows, heaters, bathrooms and damp basements.
- Clean holders with a microfiber cloth only, never paper towel.
- Handle slabs by the edges and set them down on a soft surface.
Frequently asked questions
Do bumpers scratch the slab?
No. TPU is softer than the slab surface and grips by friction, with no adhesive and no residue.
Can I stack protected slabs?
Yes. Guard Acrylic cases, Metal Cases and Acrylic Boxes are all designed to stack. Bare PSA slabs are the ones that slide.
Will these fit BGS slabs?
No. BGS holders are shorter and thicker than PSA holders, so they need their own fit: the Guard Acrylic BGS. See the full slab dimensions guide and the PSA vs BGS vs CGC vs TAG fit guide.
Does the magnet in the Metal Case affect the card?
No. Trading cards are paper and plastic. The magnet only holds the case closed.
Is protection worth it on a low-grade or cheap card?
A bumper costs less than most shipping fees, and it keeps the holder clean if you sell or trade the card later. For anything you plan to keep or resell, yes.
