Magnetic Metal Slab Case vs Acrylic Slab Case: Which Should You Choose?

· Updated

Short answer: choose the magnetic Metal Case PSA ($24.99) for grails, for cards on display near any daylight, and for mixed PSA, CGC and TAG collections, because it adds UV-protective glass and an aluminum frame. Choose the Guard Acrylic ($14.99) for the best protection per dollar across a larger collection, and for BGS slabs.

Both protect your graded card. They do it differently, look different and suit different collectors. Here is how a magnetic metal slab case compares to an acrylic slab case, and how to split your collection between them.

The two options

Metal Case PSA: an anodized aluminum frame, an anti-scratch UV-protective glass panel and a strong magnetic closure. Fits standard PSA, CGC and TAG slabs. 36 colorways, $24.99 CAD, or 3 for $59.99.

Guard Acrylic: a shock-absorbing TPU guard combined with a rigid, crystal-clear acrylic case. Separate versions for PSA (40 colorways) and BGS (12 colorways). $14.99 CAD, or 3 for $39.99.

Choose the Metal Case if

  • The card is a grail and you want the most protection we make.
  • It will sit on display where any daylight reaches it. The UV-protective glass helps prevent fading.
  • Your collection mixes PSA, CGC and TAG and you want one case for all three.
  • You like a heavier, premium feel and the click of a magnetic closure.
  • You want a gift that feels special: a slab in a metal case looks like a trophy.

Choose the Guard Acrylic if

  • You are protecting a larger collection and want the best protection per dollar.
  • You collect BGS. The Guard Acrylic BGS is built for Beckett holders.
  • You want shock absorption on the corners from the TPU guard plus scratch protection on both faces.
  • Your slabs live in boxes or on shelves away from direct light.
  • You want to color-code a big collection with 40 colorways.

Use both

Many collectors put the Metal Case on their top few cards and the Guard Acrylic on everything else. Both fit inside the Acrylic Box PSA, so you can display them side by side without removing the protection. And both ride safely in the window of the SLABIUM BAG at card shows.

Frequently asked questions

Is the metal case heavy?

It is about 20 g heavier than the acrylic case, which is part of the premium feel. It is still easy to carry to a show.

Does the magnet affect the card?

No. Trading cards are paper and plastic. The magnet only holds the case closed.

Which one stacks better?

Both stack. Bare slabs are the ones that slide.

Does acrylic turn yellow?

Quality acrylic stays clear for years indoors. Keeping any display out of direct sun is still the best habit.

Can I fit a BGS slab in the Metal Case?

No. BGS holders are a different size. Use the Guard Acrylic BGS. See the full fit guide.
